The Exmoor Fungus Group is dedicated to studying and recording the diverse fungi of Exmoor, contributing to a deeper understanding of our local ecosystems. We welcome both beginners and experienced enthusiasts to join our friendly community in exploring and documenting these fascinating organisms.
Please note: As a novice group, we do not provide guidance on the edibility of fungi. Our focus is on observation, identification, and conservation.
Respect the Countryside Code – We follow the Countryside Code at all times, ensuring we protect nature and respect landowners.
Minimal Collection – We only take small samples when necessary for identification and study, leaving the habitat as undisturbed as possible.
Tread Lightly – Leaf litter, logs, and soil are essential to fungi and wildlife; we take care to minimise disruption.
Dogs Welcome – Well-behaved dogs may join us where permitted but must be kept under control at all times.
Children Welcome – Under-18s are encouraged to take part but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Be Terrain-Ready – Walks may cover 3–5 miles over steep, uneven ground. Ensure you're comfortable with varied terrain.
Dress for the Wild – Long sleeves and trousers help protect against scratches, bites, and stings.
Step Safely – Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip for rough and slippery paths.
Watch Your Step – Off-trail exploring can reveal hidden brambles, potholes, and even barbed wire!
Stay Hydrated – Bring plenty of water, especially on warm days.
Bring a Basket – A small basket, tub, or container is ideal for safely carrying fungi for identification.
Your Safety, Your Responsibility – You are responsible for your own safety, as well as that of any children, dogs, or equipment you bring.
Weather Awareness – Our walks go ahead in most conditions, but in cases of severe weather (e.g., snow, ice, high winds), we may need to cancel for safety reasons. Please check the forecast and feel free to message us if you're unsure.
